Safeguarding (Keeping Ourselves Safe)
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is best defined by the government as:
'Protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children's mental health and physical health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes'. (Keep Children Safe in Education: Statutory Guidance for Schools and Colleges (DfE 2020). It is our duty to:
- Take actions to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. This is the responsibility of everyone who comes into contact with children.
- Protecting children from maltreatment.
- Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.
- Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
- Take action to enable all children to have the best outcomes
At Rowsley Church of England Primary School the main Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs Alexia Wyer and our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs Claire Hewitt. Our committment
Our key aims are to ensure;
- We have arrangements are in place for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- All of our pupils are safe and protected from harm,
- Other elements of provision and policies are in place to enable pupils to feel safe and adopt safe practices;
- Staff, pupils, governors, visitors, volunteers and parents are aware of the expected behaviours’ and the school’s legal responsibilities in relation to the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of our pupils.

Everyone at Rowsley CofE Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. The school pays full regard to the DfES guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’.
We endevour to create a safe, positive school atmosphere through our teaching and learning, pastoral support and care for our pupils. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure we are keeping our pupils safe.
Through our curriculum and nurturing environment we make sure that our children to achieve their full potential by:
We ensure that all appropriate measures are applied in relation to everyone who works in the school who is likely to be perceived by the children as a safe and trustworthy adult including volunteers and staff employed by contractors. Safer recruitment practice includes scrutinising applicants, verifying identity and academic or vocational qualifications, obtaining professional and character references, and checking previous employment history. It also includes undertaking interviews and DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) checks. Termly Safeguarding Collective Worship:
During one Collective Worship each term there will be a focus on safeguarding, This means we will be talking to the children about how to keep themselves safe. We will help the children understand that it is their right to be happy and safe and to encourage the understanding that any problem or worry that they may have is legitimate, and to share their worries – big or small – with their trusted adult; at home, at school, or with ChildLine.
The assemblies will be led by Mrs Wyer and the content delivered in a sensitive and age appropriate way.
During the Collective Worship will we aim to give children:
- An understanding of different forms of abuse, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of harm or abuse
- Knowledge of how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse
- An awareness of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.
