PE
INTENT
At Rowsley C of E Primary School, physical education is an integral part of our curriculum. It is both inclusive and engaging, ensuring that the children acquire, develop and refine their practical skills and techniques in order to further their knowledge and understanding of PE concepts and principles.
Our high-quality teaching enables the children to develop their overall competence and to development a life-long enjoyment of sport and being active. PE lessons provide learning opportunities which enable all children to succeed; to enjoy their learning; to be resilient and consistently strive to give their best efforts at all times and achieve their potential and personal best.
Children participate in competitive sport and through this we teach children how to cooperate and collaborate effectively as part of a team and compete appropriately against others, adhering to the principles of fairness, sportsmanship and respect; values we hope to embed for future life.
We understand the importance that PE, school sport and physical activity has on children's general health, fitness and mental wellbeing. We provide opportunities for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and we teach children the importance of leading healthy, active lives and making informed and appropriate lifestyle choices.
IMPLEMENTATION
PE at Rowsley C of E Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, striking and fielding games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor & adventure activities and weekly swimming lessons for all KS2 children.
- All children participate in weekly PE lessons which focus on developing physical literacy and the skills necessary for a particular sporting activity. The sporting activity changes half –termly in line with the long term PE overview, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum. The overview has been designed with the children’s progression in mind, allowing them to revisit and build upon previously learned skills, giving children the confidence to succeed. We provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND.
- All children at Rowsley C of E Primary regularly take part in inter school sports competitions, regardless of their sporting backgrounds or ability; our ethos of inclusivity for all means that every child is given the opportunity to represent the school and feel proud to be part of a team.
- All children at Rowsley C of E Primary are given opportunities to partake in workshops/whole school events, sourced by school and delivered by outside providers such as Bikeability, Extra Time events, fitness festivals provided by Rural Derbyshire SSP, as well as taster sessions from local sports clubs such as Bakewell Golf Club and Darley Dale Cricket Club. These events provide the children with an opportunity to experience new activities, learn new skills, improve their fitness and to try something new.
- We offer a Residential OAA experience for all KS2 children on a two-year cycle, where children have the opportunity to take part in activities such as orienteering, rock climbing, circus skills and fencing,
- All children take part in our annual inclusive sports day, with the emphasis on participation and achievement for all.
- Every day, children across school participate in a “Daily Mile” and break and lunch time sports activities are provided by the upper KS2 children, who received specialist, sports leader training. This not only encourages children to come together to be active and have fun, but enables the older children opportunities for sports leadership.
- At Rowsley C of E Primary school, we understand that swimming is an important life skill and, as such, the children receive weekly swimming lessons throughout both upper and lower KS2.
IMPACT
At Rowsley C of E Primary School, we ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive and progressive and allows all children the opportunity to acquire and develop fundamental knowledge, understanding, skills and techniques and apply these to a wide variety of different sports and activities. PE lessons are fun, enjoyable and challenging and all children can achieve, to the best of their ability, in a supportive, safe and stimulating environment. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise and activity for their physical and mental wellbeing. We aspire for all children to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity, providing the healthy foundations for future life outside of primary school. Children are proud of their sporting achievements, both in and out of school, and are given opportunities to celebrate their individual and team successes in our weekly celebration assemblies.
